Microbiology analysis is one of CLS’s core competencies since its initial establishment.
All members of the microbiology team are highly qualified, experienced analysts who provide qualitative and quantitative analysis.
Our advanced processes and standards ensure that our microbiological sampling and monitoring services meet industry regulations and allow trends to be identified.
Complete Laboratory Solutions works with a wide range of industries including dairy, meat, processed foods, ready-to-eat food industries along with industrial kitchens and retail/delicatessen units.

Food Testing and Analysis:
All European food businesses are required by law to have food safety management systems based on the principles of HACCP. In Ireland, preventative management using HACCP is the mandatory approach to food safety and product sampling is used to verify that the HACCP system is working.
CLS’s Food Testing and Analysis offers the following range of microbiological testing to the food industry.
• Pathogen Detection
• Food Spoilage bacteria enumeration
• Shelf life testing
• Salmonella Control Programme
• Food Safety Programme
• Food Safety Audits
• Foreign Body Identification
• Investigation of Food Poisoning complaints
• Cleaning Validation
• Water Testing
• Investigative Microbiology (Root cause analysis)

Drinking/Process Water Sampling & Analysis:
The presence of bacteria and pathogenic (disease-causing) organisms is a concern when considering the safety of drinking water or water used in the preparation of foods. Pathogenic organisms can cause intestinal infections, dysentery, hepatitis, typhoid fever, cholera, and other illnesses. Bacterial contamination cannot be detected by sight, smell or taste. The only way to determine if a water supply contains bacteria is to test it.
CLS provide a range of microbiological testing services for drinking water, process water and ice to comply with the EC (Drinking Water) (No.2) Regulations 2007.Our service includes:
• Pathogen Detection
• Indicator Bacteria enumeration e.g. Total Coliforms
• Legionella Risk Assesment/Sampling/Analysis/Control
• Monitoring effective water treatment
• Cryptosporidium Analysis.
Cryptosporidium is a protozoan organism which causes cryptosporidiosis. Cryptosporidium parvum is now recognised as a human pathogen which can cause severe diarrheal illness. Ingestion of drinking water contaminated with viable Cryptosporidium oocysts, the environmentally resistant form of the organism, is the major mode of transmission. Cryptosporidium is introduced into the water supply via animal excreta containing oocysts.
Surface Hygiene Swabs:
Surface hygiene swabs provide a flexible method for collecting samples from onsite surfaces. Samples can be collected from items such as kitchen equipment, food preparation surfaces, door handles and even carcass surfaces from abattoirs. Monitoring surface hygiene swabs will assess the standard of hygiene and efficiency of cleaning procedures.
Regular monitoring with Hand Hygiene Swabs of food operators will verify effective hand washing techniques and thus reduce the risk of cross contamination in the kitchen. Our service includes:
• Total Viable Counts
• Listeria analysis
Air Quality Monitoring:
Monitoring microbial levels in a process environment, should be undertaken regularly to demonstrate an effective air filtration system and good work practices. The process must be rigorously controlled to prevent microbial contamination. This includes, not only the processing equipment, but also the processing environment including the air, which may reduce product shelf life, and in certain circumstances, pose a serious hazard to food safety. Our service includes:
• Airborne Pathogens e.g. Listeria spp.
• Total Viable Counts
• Staphylococcus spp. (related to human activity)
• Yeasts and Moulds
CLS strives for continuous improvement both in the operation of our laboratories and the service we provide to our clients.
CLS complies to ISO 17025, ISO 9001:2000 the Certification of Monitoring and Auditing Program and has been awarded INAB accreditation by the Irish National Accreditation Board. Registration Number 1 08T. ISO 17025 is the international standard that specifies the general requirements for the competence of laboratories to carry out tests. Accreditation to this standard is formal recognition that the laboratory is competent to carry out tests detailed in the scope. As part of the ongoing accreditation to ISO 17025, all technical and quality systems are audited on an annual basis by INAB assessors.
CLS laboratory staff participate in an extensive range of external proficiency schemes in the Microbiology laboratory. This is an integral part of the quality control system at CLS. Analytical performance in the external schemes is assessed on an ongoing basis ensuring the quality of the test results leaving the laboratory. Schemes currently being delivered at CLS include HPA U.K., Dept. Of Agriculture, SPDL Cryptosporidium Scheme, Aquacheck, EPA.
