Petroleum
CLS offers the following services to the Petroleum industry.
CLS is recognised as a center of excellence for the interpretation and analysis of TPH petroleum related incidences. We provide our clients with a wide range of services from sampling to analysis and reporting by our experienced team. Within our laboratory we offer the following hydrocarbon analysis suites;
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH):
PAHs comprise of two or more benzene rings and many of them including benzo(a)pyrene have been found to be carcinogenic and mutagenic. They are ubiquitous in the environment and their occurrence is often correlated to the incomplete combustion of organic matter related to the use of petroleum products (automobile fuels, lubricating oils) or to combustion processes (fuel, wood and coal burning). The PAHs of most interest in environmental chemistry are the 16 USEPA PAHs as listed in the Table below, as these compounds were considered to pose a significant environmental risk.
Table 1. Compounds considered to pose a significant environmental risk.

Petrol Range Organics:
The Petrol Range Organics (PRO) or Gasoline Range Organics (GRO) method at CLS includes the following analytes: benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX) as well as naphthalene and methyl-tertiary butyl ether (MTBE); alkanes/cycloalkanes in the n-C5 to n-C8 and n-C9 to n-C12 carbon ranges; and aromatics/alkenes in the n-C9 to n-C10 carbon range. These aromatic hydrocarbons are widely used in the chemical industry. At CLS we have determined the following Limits of Quantitation (LOQ) for these parameters.

Diesel Range Organics:
Diesel Range Organics or Extractable Petroleum Hydrocarbons are a group of hydrocarbons found within the carbon range of n-C8 to n-C40. Typically petroleum products such as kerosene, diesel, lubrication oil and mineral oil can be determined by this method. Other hydrocarbon sources such as peat, coal, and tar can be identified using this technique.
